On Monday, July 27, 2015 we met at Ruth Howard's home in Sicamous where we got into car pools and travelled to Revelstoke where we met at the park by the beautiful Columbia River. Everyone brought their own lunch with lots to share and we sat down to a lovely picnic lunch.
After lunch we went up Revelstoke Mountain. Our first stop was at a lookout where we saw the Columbia which is the largest river flowing into the Pacific Ocean from North America. On the continent, only the Mississippi, Mackenzie, Yukon, St. Lawrence and Rio Grand rivers are larger. The river begins at Columbia Lake near Fairmont Hot Springs. It winds 2000 km through B.C, Wahington, & Oregon and emties into the Pacific at Astoria, Oregon. The rivers drainage basin is roughly the size of France.
The Columbia River divides the Selkirk Mountains from the Monashee Mountains. We were on the extreme western side of the Selkirks looking over the valley below.
Aren’t we blessed to be living around one of the most beautiful places on earth!
At the base of Mount Revelstoke we saw rainforest cedars and hemlocks and as we went further up the mountain the trees changed to very tall, thin subalpine firs and spruces in the “snowforest” areas.

Notice the Trees here - The trees change, the further up the mouton we go. |
